Joachim is director of the Institute for Biosafety in Plant Biotechnology (SB) at the Julius Kuehn Institute in Germany. The work of SB focuses on risk assessment and monitoring of genetically modified organisms (GMO) as well as the parallel cultivation of plants with and without genetic modification (coexistence). SB also provides advice to Government bodies on the safety aspects of gene technology and coexistence. In addition, Professor Schiemann has coordinated several national and EU-funded projects focussed on biosafety research, including most recently acting as President of the Executive Committee of the International Society for Biosafety. He coordinates the EU-funded project GRACE (GMO Risk Assessment and Communication of Evidence).
